Matthew J. Beem has been named President and Chief Operating Officer. Hartsook Companies Chairman and CEO Bob Hartsook has charged Beem with the firm’s day-to-day management and shared his plan to name him CEO in 2011. Having played a key leadership role since joining the firm in 2001, Beem holds a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and a master of public administration in nonprofit management from the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
A valued consultant and frequent speaker, Beem is completing his dissertation on fundraiser compensation at UMKC and will earn his Ph.D. in 2010. He has written chapters and journal articles for fundraising publications and will co-author a chapter on planned giving with Adrian Sargeant, whose definitive book on fundraising preparation Jossey Bass will release early next year. ASR publishing will release Beem’s first solo book in the next six months. Beem sits on the Graceland University Board of Trustees and the Blue Elk District Committee of the Boy Scouts of America Heart of America Council. He lives in Independence, Mo., with his wife and three children.
Robert G. Swanson has been promoted from President to Vice Chairman of Hartsook Companies. Swanson, a key leader of Hartsook Companies since 1997, is known for his outstanding consulting work and, most recently, his book on nonprofit board fundraising, Fundraising Magic, released in 2007 from ASR Publishing. In his new role Swanson will report directly to Chairman and CEO Bob Hartsook and have wide influence in the direction of the company’s future.
A natural-born leader, author, speaker and mentor, Swanson is the founder of the Hartsook Academy which is the company’s extensive, in-house training program. He has a bachelor degree from Emporia State University and a MBA from Friends University. He is married with two children and lives in Emporia, KS.
Ronald Loewen has accepted a role as Vice Chairman for Digital Strategies for Hartsook Companies. Loewen, a University of Kansas law graduate and former Vice President for Strategic Plans for the Liberty Corp. prior to its sale to Raccom, will lead an effort to assure that Hartsook Companies is on the forefront of internet communications and that its partners, Hartsook Institutes and ASR Publishing, are well positioned.
Loewen has his own consulting practice, Loewen Consulting, located in Columbia, SC. He has enjoyed a distinguished career with over 30 years of experience in the fields of journalism, media management, and corporate business development. Loewen was the architect of Liberty Digital wherein he crafted a revolutionary local television online news and information strategy. Based on household audience and revenue growth, the Liberty Digital model was recognized as local television’s most successful online news and information model.
