Newton's "Laws" of Fundraising

image
Generally, people are familiar with the fact that Sir Isaac Newton identified the three laws of motion regarding inertia, acceleration and action/reaction.

Yet, you probably didn't realize (nor did he) that in doing so, he uncovered three "laws" of fundraising.

Consider these realities as you raise funds for your organization:

Organizations at rest

As it was in Newton's lab, organizations at rest don't suddenly become active in fundraising unless a conscious and strategic force is exerted. What does this mean for a nonprofit? An organization at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon. If you want to raise funds for your mission, you must act. It won't just happen.

F = MA
The force (F) of your fundraising effort is equal to the size of the fundraising team/mass (M) multiplied by the active engagement/acceleration of your leadership (A). Ultimately, the impact of your efforts will be dictated by both the number of leaders in the organization and the level of their enthusiasm and involvement in the fundraising process.

Generate a reaction

Your fundraising results will reflect your efforts. You will need to spend as much time planning as you do implementing your strategies. You will need to push as hard as you hope to see the needle move on your goals.

A cohesive effort to advance your mission through fundraising will result in greater dollars raised, increased awareness, and a more positive community presence. Likewise, a haphazard attempt at raising a few dollars fast - without a plan - could damage the organization's reputation, as well as fail to raise the necessary funds to operate effectively. If you want to be successful, don't sit back and wait for it to happen. Get moving. Apply force. Generate a reaction.
