Cast a Wider Net

imageOrganizations often miss out on grants because they take a narrow view of their mission and meaningful work. For example, a camp may look for foundations giving to camps. That's fine, but those will be few and far between.

What about foundations giving to youth (since the camp provides programs for youth)? What about foundations giving to environmental issues (since the camp offers classes on protecting and respecting the environment)? What about foundations giving to support individuals with disabilities (since the camp offers summer camps for families with a child living with a disability)? The list goes on and on.

Here are tips for casting a wider net when researching potential grants and gifts to your nonprofit:

Revisit your mission statement.
You might be surprised by how few individuals in your organization really know the nonprofit's mission. "What does it matter?" you may ask, but making sure your staff, volunteers and board members know your organization's mission by heart can spark creative, out-of-the-box thinking.

Review the benefits.
How are lives changed by your organization? Museums may research foundations that support science, but what about the benefits of after-school programs offered at the museum? What about the economic boost a zoo provides to the community as a destination spot? Why not research community foundations that support economic growth in the county?

Research new findings.
Add value and new facets to your grants by including research from institutions regarding your organization's areas of focus. Studies on the benefits of X and the outcomes of Y - conducted by creditable institutions - are available if you know how to research and where to look. Including these facts and figures in your grant proposal will make an even stronger case for support.

Don't miss out on potential funding. Think big. Expand your horizons and cast a wider net.
