Colin Stewart has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the George W. Bush Foundation in Dallas. Stewart was formerly the Vice President of Development at the Heritage Foundation, Washington, D.C.

Hartsook promotions announced by Matt Beem included Annette Lough, from Vice President of Client Services to Senior Vice President for Marketing and Client Services; Laurie Walker, from Vice President for Business Development to Senior Vice President for Business Development and Resource Management; Cathy Rutz, from Business Manager to Director of Business Affairs; and Tammy Weinman, from Office Manager to Director of Business Improvement and Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer.

Mary Shannon has been promoted to Vice President of Advancement for Envision, Inc. of Wichita, Kan. Envision completed a $3.1 million campaign this past year.

Jaime Zablah, CEO of FUNDASALVA and Associate Consultant for Hartsook Companies, was recently named to the International Task Force on Strategic Drug Policy for El Salvador for the Drug Free American Foundation; he will serve the northern part of Central America (Guatemala and Honduras). Zablah was also a featured guest on "Hablando del Sida", a Spanish-language television news show focused on the AIDS epidemic as it relates to illegal drug use.

The Vision Research Foundation of Kansas City and the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine announced the appointment of Peter Koulen, Ph.D. to the Felix and Carmen Sabates Missouri Endowed Chair in Vision Research at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri Kansas City. Dr. Koulen's leadership skills and expertise will allow Vision Research Center to pursue its mission of being a leader in basic and clinical research, and understanding, treating, and preventing diseases that cause blindness.

Lou Gehring, Executive Director of the Shawnee Mission Medical Center Foundation, Shawnee, Kan., has been named by the Associate of Fundraising Professionals Mid-America Chapter (Kansas City, Mo.) as the Outstanding Fundraising Executive of the Year for 2009 and will be honored at National Philanthropy Day events in November. Gehring joins Joanna Seblien, Vice President for Resources at Harvesters - Community Food Network; Davoren Tempel, formerly Vice President at Children's Mercy Hospital and now Hartsook Executive Vice President; Terry Snapp, formerly Executive Director at Truman Medical Center and now Hartsook Companies Executive Vice President; Bud Cooper, Hartsook Companies Executive Vice President; Lynn Hawks, Hartsook Companies Senior Vice President; and Norma Murphy, Hartsook Executive Vice President as past Fundraiser of the Year recipients.

Murray Blackwelder, President of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Foundation, has been honored by Indiana University with the Russo Award. This distinguished award is given in honor of Hank Russo who is generally known as one of the founders of the fundraising profession. Blackwelder will accept the award in December in Indianapolis.

Betty Drees, M.D., FACP, Dean of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, has been appointed as the Chair of the Governing Council of the American Medical Association's Section on Medical Schools.

Angel Flight Central (Kansas City Mo.) Board President Melanie Tucker announced the appointment of Don Sumple as CEO/Executive Director.  Jack Kennedy, Steve Pearson, Bill Goedken, and Tom Holcom participated in the search and selection process.

Missouri State University won the 2009 CASE-WealthEngine Award for educational fundraising. The award honors "superior fundraising programs" across the country as part of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education Circle of Excellence program. Last year, the Missouri State University Foundation's gifts and commitments totaled a record $14,050,400, which surpassed the previous all-time high of $11,826,286 set in 2005-06.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine reported that 37 of its 85 students will remain in the state of Missouri for residency training, with more than one-third in the primary care fields of internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and medicine/pediatrics. UMKC Chancellor Leo E. Morton, and School of Medicine Dean Betty Drees, M.D., FACP., have played a leading role in making the School of Medicine such a vibrant institution.
