Homecare & Hospice Foundation (Manhattan, Kan.) successfully concluded its "Sheltering Embrace" campaign, raising $4.7 million for construction of the 33-year old organization's hospice house; an additional $400,000 was raised for annual fund. Campaign Co-Chairs Rita Keating and Dean Thibault, and Director of Development Chris Nolte were integral to this accomplishment. - Robert G. Swanson, Vice Chairman (Wichita, Kan.)

The Adult Development Center (ADC) of Benton County, Inc. (Rogers, Ark.) received a combined $17,125 in gifts from Pel Industries, Inc., Sharon Washburn, and Jo and Don Soderquist for the Dick Trammel and Neile Jones "Sponsor the Bus" match fund. Nearly $4.6 million has been raised toward an overall campaign goal of $6.4 million. ADC provides services for disabled adults; "Sponsor the Bus" provides transportation to stops throughout Benton County for ADC clients. - Matthew J. University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine received a $10,000 gift from alum James Ho, M.D. '88 to endow a scholarship honoring his mentor and docent, Dr. James F. Stanford. The James F. Stanford, M.D. Patient Advocate Scholarship will be awarded to a medical student who demonstrates humanism, advocacy and compassion in the treatment of patients. Dean Betty Drees, M.D., FACP provided assistance. - Bob Hartsook, Chairman and CEO (Wrightsville Beach, N.C.)

The Claremont School of Theology (Claremont, Calif.) campaign raised more than $12 million, including support for eight new full scholarships. The $125 million campaign continues to raise endowed and general scholarship funds. - Duane L. Dyer, ThM, Executive Vice President (San Francisco); Lisa M. Marcia, Fundraising Manager (Claremont, Calif.); James Mininger, PhD, Senior Vice President (Claremont, Calif.); Ken Heisz, Vice President (Pacific Palisades, Calif.); Bronnie McNabb, Fundraising Manager (Claremont, Calif.); David Nienas, Fundraising Manager (Claremont, Calif.); Gary Oba, Fundraising Manager (Claremont, Calif.); and Dolores Montoya, Fundraising Manager (Claremont, Calif.)

Family Life Center (Riverton, Kan.) received a $400,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce in support of its campaign to build a Community Health Education and Wellness Center, and a $125,000 grant for the Learning Wing - a therapeutic pre-school, after-school programming space and adult services group room. Executive Director Scott Jackson and Development Director Melissa Cromwell report that the campaign has received commitments totaling over $1.2 million towards the $2.1 million goal. - Norma R. reStart, Inc. (Kansas City) received funding from the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill and was awarded $380,000 for Phase II of the renovation of its main facility. Work on the 1917 building will result in safer, more energy efficient residential floors for the emergency shelter housing and new transitional living units. Two additional grants include: $250,000 from the Missouri Housing Trust Fund; and $175,000 from the City of Kansas City, Missouri's Community Development Block grant program. Senator "Kit" Bond and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and their staffs helped, along with reStart's Board of Directors and Capital Campaign Cabinet chaired by Bill Dunn, Sr. and Bob Dunn. - Jennifer Curzon, Vice President (Kansas City, Mo.)

The Salvation Army - Williamsburg (Va.) is in the organizational stage of its "We're Here When You Need Us" campaign, with Advisory Board solicitation under way. The $4.5 million campaign will provide funding for a new Corps facility large enough to address current and future needs, provide a strong endowment, and help support the region's Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC). Along with Capt. Debbie Bowers, and National Capital and Virginia Divisional Director of Development David Sears, the early campaign is being led by Advisory Board President Joe Avellar, Sophia Harler, Carolyn and Don Hunt, and Phil Merrick. - Karin Cox, Executive Vice President (Wilmington, N.C.) and Janell Johnson, Vice President (Wilmington, N.C.)

Family Guidance Center (St. Joseph, Mo.) received significant gifts from the William T. Kemper Foundation, the Leah Spratt Charitable Trust and the local Hy-Vee grocery store, bringing their campaign total to $375,000 toward a goal of $2.3 million. The effort has been led by President and CEO Garry Hammond, and Campaign Co-chairs Teresa Humphreys, Bill McMurray and Ali Wray. - Bridgette O'Connor, Senior Vice President (Kansas City, Mo.); Terry Snapp, Executive Vice President (Kansas City, Mo.)

Community Services League's (Independence, Mo.) "2009 Brighter Futures" capital campaign has raised $1,066,058, including a recent $100,000 grant from the William T. Kemper Foundation. The $2.5 million campaign will enable the 93-year old organization, which offers emergency assistance (food, utilities, prescriptions, etc.), housing, counseling and job placement/retention services to individuals and families in need, to renovate and move into an expanded community resource center. Leading the campaign is Campaign Chair and Board President Katherine Barton, along with Trudy Beard, Randy Castle, Byron Constance, Fred Hahn, Martin Kuny, Barbara Potts, Betty Snapp and Norman Swails. - Matt Beem

Geneva Hills (Lancaster, Ohio) received a gift of $10,000 from an anonymous donor in memory of Edith Bailey to support the "Celebrating New Life and Growth" campaign. With the addition of a $10,000 gift from Rosemary and Len Hajost, $460,000 has been raised toward a $1.25 million goal. This first-phase campaign for the acquisition of land, operating and continued support, is part of a larger vision that will update, renovate and build facilities, and improve the property to open the doors to a more diverse audience. Leading the campaign is Committee Chair Glenn Burns, Patti Beam, Jim Callahan, Leonard Gorsuch, Rosemary and Len Hajost, along with Kristy and Geoff Burns. - Karin Cox

Hetlinger Developmental Services (Emporia, Kan.) recently received a $250,000 gift as part of its "Everyday Heroes" campaign to fund a major expansion. The 49-year old organization has secured more than $800,000 towards its $2 million goal in less than 12 months and the campaign has already produced the largest gift in the history of the organization. - Robert Swanson

Providence House (Shreveport, La.), a residential development center for homeless families with children, has secured commitments totaling $910,445 toward the $2.4 million goal set for the board and staff campaign phase of their "Gift of a Lifetime" campaign, which seeks $14.5 million for endowment and $2.5 million for programming. Board President Larry Little and Executive Director Simone Hennessee were instrumental in this progress. - Norma Murphy

Wilderness Retreat and Development Center (Lawson, Mo.) seeks more than $152,000 in 2009 for camp improvements. To date, the campaign has raised more than $20,000 in gifts and pledges. Credit for the achievement goes to Campaign Chair Pam Bessmer, Site Director Dennis Hisek, Assistant Site Director Eric Hoffman and the Campaign Leadership Team: Jerry Akins, Mark Bessmer, Steve Gaither, Donna and Bob Hoover, David Israel, Fritz Mutti, Pauline and Ed Porth, Susanne Teel, Lee Walz, Rueben Wilbur, and Lynn and Ken Woodruff. - Matt Beem

Ozarks Food Harvest is dedicating the new $4.8 million warehouse facility made possible by the recently completed "Turning Hunger Into Hope" campaign during which nearly $5 million was raised for capital and equipment, and $3.7 million for annual fund. Significant donors include the Kresge Foundation (Detroit, Mich.), Mabee Foundation (Tulsa, Okla.), The Sunderland Foundation (Overland Park, Kan.) and the Kemper Foundation (Kansas City, Mo.). Credit goes to Executive Director Bart Brown and Campaign Chairs Jim Lewis and Mike Matson. - Robert Swanson

3HC - Home Health and Hospice Care, Inc.'s (Goldsboro, N.C.) "Expanding Our Compassionate Touch" campaign, which seeks to raise a total of $4 million, has raised more than $2.3 million to date. With a gift of $750,000 from the State Employee's Credit Union, the SECU House addition expands the Kitty Askins Hospice Center from a 12- to a 24-bed facility. Campaign Co-Chairs Tom Bufkin and Kitty Sauls, and Leadership Committee members Donna Braswell, Carol Dilda, Cathy Fonvielle, Beverly Keen, Charlotte Weaver, David Weil lead the effort, along with President and CEO Dean Lee, and Vice President Jean Whitfield. - Karin Cox

reStart's Fifth Annual revUp for reStart was the most successful fundraising event in the organization's history. Held at the Armacost Museum, the event raised more than $64,000. Spearheading revUp were Co-chairs Dirk Schafer and Barbara Mueth; they were supported by reStart Director of Development Sara Harper. - Jennifer Curzon

Intersection Connection (Lafayette, Ind.) - a partnership between Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette, the YMCA and Junior Achievement - initiated a $92 million campaign to create three new buildings on the Ivy Tech Community College Lafayette Campus for health classes, childcare, job training and other community enrichment programs. Ivy Tech Lafayette is receiving $1.2 million of $6.1 million in stimulus money awarded to several colleges and universities in Indiana. The collaboration is called the Indiana Advanced Electric Vehicle Training and Education Consortium, and it will help educate and train Hoosiers for jobs in the electric vehicle industry. Safeco Insurance recently donated an art collection valued at $82,970 to Ivy Tech-Lafayette. The art will be added to the college's collection of art by Indiana artists, which is exhibited in college buildings for the benefit of students and the community. Campaign Cabinet members include: Executive Director Paul Cramer, Board and Intersection Connection Coordinating Committee member Jim Gothard, Board Chair Sheriff Tracy Brown and Board member Jim Andrew from Lafayette Family YMCA; Board Member and State Trustee Steve Schreckengast, President Thomas J. Snyder, Lafayette Region Chancellor Dr. David Bathe, Regional Board of Trustees Chair, Intersection Connection Coordinating Committee Member and Tippecanoe County Council Member Kathy Vernon, Regional Board member, Foundation Board Member and Intersection Connection Coordinating Committee member Dr. Gregg Tharp and Executive Director of Resource Development Pat Corey from Ivy Tech; and Development Manager Beth Carroll, Vice President Katie DeGroot and Intersection Connection Coordinating Committee Member Rick Davis from Junior Achievement. - Matt Beem

The Kansas Humane Society (Wichita, Kan.) recently moved into its new $9 million facility. The Murfin Animal Care Campus was designed and constructed to provide the best care for animals. The "New Leash on Life" campaign, chaired by George Fahnestock and Barry Schwann, and staffed by Executive Director Kim Janzen and Director of Development Kristi Oberg, secured two gifts of $1 million or more and engaged more than 600 donors. The Murfin Campus will be a model for animal care throughout the country, demonstrating the many benefits of this public/private partnership; it will also help end the euthanasia of all adoptable animals that come into the care of the organization. - Robert Swanson

Black Hills State University Foundation (Spearfish, S.D.) received three new gifts: $10,000 from Phyllis and Otis Eastman, $11,000 from Margaret and Douglas Fuerstenau; $50,000 from Katie and Jim Hood. This increases the total raised to $5.14 million, a fundraising record for the foundation. Vice President for Advancement Steve Meeker, Director of Major Gifts Dwight Hansen, and University President Dr. Kay Schallenkamp were involved. - Terry Snapp

FUNDASALVA (San Salvador, El Salvador), a national anti-drug organization, recently received a commitment of 85,000 euros from the German Embassy in El Salvador to support rehabilitation programs and to open the first drug prevention call center in El Salvador. They will receive 45,000 euros from the Italian International Cooperation to aid in the opening the first rehabilitation center for homeless, drug-using youth under the age of 17. FUNDASALVA was also the recipient of a $12,000 gift from DIANA, a leading producer of potato chips. - Matt Beem

Westminster Presbyterian Church (Rockford, Ill.) is preparing to launch its "Embracing the Future: Powered Up for Mission for Today and Tomorrow" campaign. The $2.2 million initiative, which has secured $250,000, will fund the new church building and generate resources for facility improvements and additions. Co-Pastors Bill Ward and David Smazik have taken a lead role. - Matt Beem

reStart's Safety Net Mental Health Services was among 29 projects selected to receive funding from the REACH Healthcare Foundation. The grant totaled $110,625. - Jennifer Curzon

Fort Scott Community College (Fort Scott, Kan.) completed construction of its new fine arts center. This multi-year campaign, which is now in its final phase, has raised $8.7 million towards the $10.2 million goal. A $900,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation has generated additional enthusiasm. The college was featured in the Kresge Foundation Annual Report for 2009. President Clayton Tatro, Director of Development Daryl Roller, and Executive Director of the Gordon Parks Museum Jill Warford receive credit for this accomplishment. - Terry Snapp

Shawnee Mission Medical Center's (Shawnee, Kan.) campaign has exceeded $18 raised million toward a $30 million goal. This is the largest campaign ever launched by the hospital. Gifts from board members and physicians have been the largest in the organization's history. For the fifth year, Medical Center employees have participated in the "Associates Campaign" which focuses on recurring gifts. The Johnson County Credit Union annually offers a challenge for this project. Lou Gehring is the Executive Director of the Foundation. - Bob Hartsook

Philanthropy Journal (Raleigh, N.C.) has been working on a plan for increasing its fundraising efforts. As one of only a few nonprofit journalism outlets, the popular Philanthropy Journal has initiated a membership program for the first time. Membership allows for involvement by readers in major engagement opportunities with the publication. Todd Cohen is Editor and Publisher of the publication; it is supported by the Fletcher Foundation of North Carolina. - Karin Cox and Bob Hartsook

Harvesters, Kansas City's Food Bank is reaping the benefit of its years as the beta site for the Hartsook Initiative Program. With fiscal year 2009 ending, one of America's largest food banks completed a record fundraising year with goals exceeded in virtually every category. The emphasis on childhood hunger, senior feeding, nutrition, and family feeding, has stood the program in good stead. Among the highlights of the year are a $1.3 million grant from the Hall Family Foundation and the completion of a $630,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation. - Bob Hartsook
