Between the Lines
Karin Cox, Executive Vice President (Wilmington, N.C.) is the author of the chapter on fundraising events in Hartsook Chair Adrian Sargeant's forthcoming definitive book for fundraising education. Rather than offering a how-to chapter on event planning, Karin takes the unique approach of focusing on the goal for the event and the organization's ability to reach the goal. What will be known as the Cox Fundraising Event Grid is a simple, yet vital tool for fundraisers and those who employ fundraisers to evaluate an event's success.
Matt Beem, President and COO, and Bob Hartsook, Chairman and CEO, are also contributing to Sargeant's book in the fields of planned giving and major gift development. The book is expected to be released at the end of 2009 or early 2010.
Sargeant has completed the first new case study on fundraising to qualify for inclusion in Harvard Case Study Review. The study, which is only the second such case ever written for academic purposes, reviews the work leading up to the Heritage Foundation's fundraising success. John von Kannon, Vice President and Treasurer, and Colin Stewart, formerly Vice President for Development at Heritage, contributed to the work. Heritage is a long-time client of Hartsook and an Initiatives Project participant.
Todd Cohen, Editor and Publisher of the Philanthropy Journal, has completed a five-part series on changes in educational fundraising. The blogs are based on Sargeant and Hartsook's research- and knowledge-based approach. Initially appearing in late summer, the series was re-released by the Sanford Social Review and portions were picked up by the Harvard Nonprofit Journals. The series can be found at www.hartsookcompanies.com under the "News" link.
Jean Kresse, Senior Vice President, was featured in the September 6 issue of National School Foundation Association magazine with her article on "Getting Started With Planned Giving." Kresse has been with Hartsook for nine years and lives in Ames, Iowa.
Mal Warwick, author of FUNDRAISING WHEN MONEY IS TIGHT, published this year by Wiley and Company, quotes Adrian Sargeant, the Hartsook Chair at Indiana University, widely in his book which appeared in early 2009.
Bob Hartsook, Chairman and CEO of Hartsook, is featured in Mass Nonprofit Magazine on "Five Things Not To Do in a Campaign." This article appeared in their August 29, 2009 issue.
The case statement for the Center on Philanthropy's $100 million MOVING PHILANTHROPY FORWARD campaign was just released by the Indiana University institution. Bob Hartsook serves on the Center's Board of Visitors, a distinction shared by Hartsook's late Chairman Emeritus, Art Franztreb.
