Consider This

photoThe time to get into the market is when the market is down, when people are leaving it or are too scared to get in. Opportunity abounds. The upside is enormous. But what do most people do? They wait and see what the herd is doing - and when the herd finally moves in, those who waited are already late getting into the game.

So it is with nonprofits. The time to plan and launch the quiet phase of a campaign is when others are walking away or too leery to get in. Don't wait on the herd, be the first over the horizon, helping your clients.

Labette Community College (Parsons, Kan.) has been awarded a $1 million challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation for a new Health Science Building - the centerpiece of LCC's "Preparing a Pathway to the Future" campaign. What is the Price of Compassion?

imageWhat is the price of compassion? This is the question members of the Homecare & Hospice Foundation (Manhattan, Kan.) asked themselves before launching their first multi-million dollar campaign.

For about a decade, the annual development program for Homecare & Hospice revolved around a series of successful special events - a wine festival, a year-end light-of-life remembrance and a year-round memorial program. There was a database of charitable donors, but there were no major gift donors. On the positive side, there was also a pool of families who had been thoughtfully served through the years, decades of good relationships, and a track record of caring and quality service.

Between the Lines

COO Matt Beem's article, "The Power of Giving" was featured in the Examiner, online at www.examiner.net. Asks Beem, "Which came first - philanthropy or fundraising? My clients and I volley the question back and forth each month. Some donors are self-motivated. They support their Boy Scout troop because they believe in Scouting. They give to their PTA to enrich their children's education. They spring for their alma mater to ensure their names are listed in the alumni magazine. If you're such a philanthropist, thanks. You make my job easier. The challenge for fundraising isn't that some in our society give of their own volition. It's that most in the profession are satisfied with such giving - lulling themselves into believing they were essential facilitators of the over-the-transom support that constitutes the majority of many institutions' philanthropy."
