Client Victories

Labette Community College (Parsons, Kan.) has been awarded a $1 million challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation for a new Health Science Building - the centerpiece of LCC's "Preparing a Pathway to the Future" campaign. This represents one of the largest grants received in the 86-year history of the College. LCC will have 18 months to raise the challenge amount of $9.4 million. When the goal is met, the Kresge Foundation will award LCC $1 million to fully fund the campaign goal of $10.4 million. The LCC Foundation has already secured pledges and donations of nearly $5 million for the capital campaign through private donations, pledges, gifts, and tax credits. LCC President Dr. George Knox has been actively involved in the campaign. "To be awarded the Kresge grant is a true honor. This prestigious award will help to fulfill the vision of the College and Foundation." - H. Layton "Bud" Cooper (Kansas City)

The Adult Development Center (ADC) of Benton County, Inc. (Rogers, Ark.) received an anonymous deferred gift valued at $617,528. ADC has raised nearly $5.4 million toward an overall campaign goal of $6.4 million to purchase land, build a new facility and grow its endowment. Shawnee Mission Medical Center (Shawnee, Kan.) announced a $1 million endowment gift as part of its $30 million capital campaign. The anonymous donor dedicated the gift to a particular SMMC Foundation program. Executive Director Lou Gehring and Director of Development Paul Rueschhoff, CFRE, both of The Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center, acknowledge this as the largest campaign ever launched by the hospital. - Bob Hartsook, Chairman and CEO (Wrightsville Beach, N.C.)

The Emporia Arts Council has begun construction of its new arts center in downtown Emporia, Kan. The organization recently completed its ARTS @ THE COUNCIL CAMPAIGN when it secured a $75,000 matching challenge grant from an anonymous donor. More than $3.6 million was secured during the campaign, including more than $2.7 million in capital gifts, $200,000 in endowment gifts and $700,000 in annual fund gifts. "We can't express enough our gratitude to the more than 400 donors to this campaign," said Executive Director Melissa Windsor. "When the new arts center opens next to the recently renovated Granada Theatre, the arts and entertainment district will be a reality." - Robert G. Swanson, Vice Chairman (Wichita, Kan.)

After just a few weeks of Advisory Board gift solicitations, The Salvation Army-Williamsburg (Williamsburg, Va.) has over $166,000 committed to their campaign, "We're Here When You Need Us". The funds will provide funding for a new Corps facility and endowment, and help support the region's Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC). Along with Capt. Debbie Bowers, the campaign is led by Advisory Board President Joe Avellar, Sophia Harler, Carolyn and Don Hunt, and Phil Merrick. - Karin Cox, Executive Vice President (Wilmington, N.C.) and Janell Johnson, Vice President (Wilmington, N.C.)

Full Circle Senior Adult Day Center (Norman, Okla.) has raised over $750,000 toward the campaign's $3,250,000 goal. Full Circle provides day services for senior adults in order to help prevent or delay age-related deterioration and nursing home entry, to support self-sufficiency, and to provide assistance to families and caregivers. - Norma R. Family Guidance Center (St. Joseph, Mo.) was awarded a $75,000 grant from the William T. Kemper Foundation (Kansas City, Mo.) bringing its total raised to date to $375,050 toward a $2.3 million campaign. Leaders include Board Chairman and Campaign Honorary Co-Chair Jim Graves; Honorary Co-Chairs LaVell and Martin Rucker; Co-Chairs Bill McMurray, Teresa Humphreys, and Ali Wray; and President and CEO Garry Hammond. - Staci Addison, Vice President (Wichita, Kan.); Bridgette O'Connor, Senior Vice President (Kansas City); and Terry Snapp, Executive Vice President (Kansas City)

Harvesters (Kansas City) successfully completed its Kresge Foundation (Detroit) challenge and received the $630,000 grant, raising more than $6.3 million toward the "Building Hope Initiatives Campaign." Harvesters was also awarded a $500,000 gift from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City to help purchase necessary food items to keep up with the rising demand for food assistance. Congratulations to Chief Resource Officer Joanna Sebelien, Director of Fund Development Angie Heer, and Major Gifts Manager Jamie Roach for these campaign successes. - Bob Hartsook

University of Missouri-Kansas City Foundation (Kansas City, Mo.) President Murray Blackwelder announced the Foundation's first major leadership gift commitment which will benefit renewable energy and environmental research at the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering. The $1.7 million gift is from Andress Kernick, an engineer whose career spanned more than 43 years. - Bob Hartsook

Corner House, (Emporia, Kan.) a drug and alcohol abuse prevention and treatment organization, was one of only 32 nonprofits across America to receive a grant from the United States Veterans Administration's Veteran Assistance Fund. The $308,000 grant was awarded to the organization as part of its Mother Child Project which serves to raise $900,000 to build an apartment and treatment complex for recovering civilian and military mothers who have young children. "We are incredibly pleased to be a recipient of the VA grant," said Executive Director Sarah Hanson. "This facility will be one of kind in Kansas." - Robert G. Swanson

The National Exchange Club (Toledo, Ohio), an all-volunteer, national service organization for men and women who want to serve their community, accepted three gifts totaling $100,000: $25,000 from Charlie Braddock (Indianapolis, Ind.); and two anonymous gifts - one of $25,000 and one of $50,000. Exchange is comprised of nearly 800 clubs and more than 25,000 members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The national campaign is supported by Trustees J. Michael Jernigan, Immediate Past President (South Carolina); Richard Gordon, President (California); Karen Askew, Secretary (Oklahoma); and Gerald Franklin (Texas). - Bob Hartsook

Geneva Hills (Lancaster, Ohio) received a gift of $15,000 to name the camp's dock. To date, over $465,000 has been raised toward a $1.25 million goal. The "Celebrating New Life and Growth" campaign will purchase land, provide operating and continued support, and will help update, renovate and build facilities - all in an effort to also open the doors to a more diverse audience. Leading the campaign with Kristy and Geoff Burns is Committee Chair Glenn Burns, Patti Beam, Jim Callahan, Leonard Gorsuch, and Rosemary and Len Hajost. - Karin Cox

Wilderness Retreat and Development Center (Lawson, Mo.) seeks more than $152,000 in 2009 for camp improvements. To date, the campaign has raised more than $18,000 in gifts and pledges. Credit for the achievement goes to Campaign Chair Pam Bessmer, Site Director Dennis Hisek, Assistant Site Director Eric Hoffman and the Campaign Leadership Team: Jerry Akins, Mark Bessmer, Steve Gaither, Donna and Bob Hoover, David Israel, Fritz Mutti, Pauline and Ed Porth, Susanne Teel, Lee Walz, Rueben Wilbur, and Lynn and Ken Woodruff. - Matt Beem

3HC - Home Health and Hospice Care, Inc. (Goldsboro, N.C.) will break ground this month on its SECU House addition that expands the Kitty Askins Hospice Center from a 12- to 24-bed facility. A gift of $750,000 from the State Employee's Credit Union brings the $4.5 million campaign to over $2.3 million. The campaign is led by President and CEO Dean Lee, and Vice President Jean Whitfield, along with Campaign Co-Chairs Tom Bufkin and Kitty Sauls, and Leadership Committee members Donna Braswell, Carol Dilda, Cathy Fonvielle, Beverly Keen, Charlotte Weaver, and David Weil. - Karin Cox

Westminster Presbyterian Church (Rockford, Ill.) recently launched its "Embracing the Future: Powered Up for Mission for Today and Tomorrow" campaign. The $2.2 million initiative, which has already secured $500,000, will fund the new church building and generate resources for facility improvements and additions. Co-Pastors Bill Ward and David Smazik have taken lead roles. - Matt Beem

Of the 20 recipients of $4.1 million in Kansas Community Tax Credits awarded this year, $625,000 went to three Hartsook Companies' clients: Family Life Center (Riverton) $125,000; Hetlinger Developmental Services (Emporia) $250,000; Arkansas City Area Arts Council (Arkansas City) $250,000. - Robert G. Hope House (Kansas City, Mo.) received approval from the AHAP Missouri Housing Development Commission for AHAP tax credits. The organization's residential and outreach services provide a safety net of prevention, education and support for victims of abuse. Its capital campaign,"Building Hope", has received gifts and pledges totaling $3,571,088, including a J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant. Recent gifts include those from J.E. Dunn Construction Company; Kansas City Southern Charitable Fund; The Sunderland Foundation; the Hall Family Foundation; The Courtney S. Turner Charitable Trust, and Bank of America. Co-Trustee Daniel C. Weary has helped in meeting this challenge. William Dunn Sr. and Norman Swails serve as Campaign Co-Chairs. Cabinet members include Barb Bloch, Amy Blunt, Carl Chinnery, Jacqueline Clark, Bob Dunn, Bob Glaser, Mike Householder, Jodi Kaplan, William Moore, Barbara Potts, The Honorable Don Reimal, Susie Shatz, Rick Viar, Sara Welch, Marion Wheeler, and Dr. Sally Winship. Also supporting the campaign are President Mary Anne Metheny, Chief Development Officer Nancy DuVall, Vice President of Development Diane Marty, CFO Ann Leabo, and Vice President of Clinical Services Rita Witt. - Matt Beem

Community Services League's (Independence, Mo.) "2009 Building Brighter Futures" capital campaign has raised $1,194,658, including a recent $50,000 grant from the Goppert Foundation and a $50,000 grant from J.E. Dunn Construction Company. The $2.5 million campaign will enable the 93-year old organization, which offers emergency assistance (food, utilities, prescriptions, etc.), housing, counseling and job placement/retention services to individuals and families in need, to renovate and move into a new 13,000-square foot Community Resource Center. Leading the campaign is Campaign Chair and Board President Katherine Barton, along with Trudy Beard, Randy Castle, Byron Constance, Fred Hahn, Martin Kuny, Barbara Potts, Betty Snapp, Roy Schaefer, Judge Jack Gant and Norman Swails. - Matt Beem

The Arkansas City Area Arts Council received $250,000 in Kansas Community Service Tax Credits in September. The 70/30 tax credits will help the organization reach its $3 million goal to renovate and make usable the old Burford Theatre in downtown Arkansas City. The Council has crossed the $2.5 million mark and must reach $3 million to secure a $450,000 J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant awarded earlier this year. - Robert G. Swanson
