photoFundraiser's Attitude: Critical to Success

The role of strategy and tactics in fundraising is important. If a fundraiser is smart, one need not rely on luck. Nevertheless, a fundraiser with an aggressively optimistic attitude is more impressive than clever tactics.

Success in raising large and small gifts begins with the attitude of those persons leading the effort and the persons who are working directly with prospects. If the Director of Development, CEO or the board President believe that due to a struggling economy charitable funds cannot be found, they will have initiated a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Pessimism produces energy wasted in excuses for low contributions. On the other hand, optimism breeds creative thinking, new solutions to challenges, and goals that succeed.

Organizational boards often are inclined toward fiscal pessimism even in an upbeat economy. If fundraising professionals are uncertain whether funds can be raised, an entrenchment attitude will be reflected in board decision-making and the creative, forward progress and cutting-edge nature of the organization will come to a rapid halt.

Hartsook consultants are frequently reminded by our leadership that we must be courageous for our clients. That statement is equally true for those of you working within charitable institutions. Have courage for the sake of the mission and vision of your organization; have courage for those who benefit from your organization's programs and services. Do not be blindly optimistic, but passionately creative and resourceful in locating and cultivating prospects!
