CHALLENGE GRANTS GENERATE $130 MILLION IN 100 DAYS!
Two prominent foundations focused on capital projects through challenge grants have changed the face of philanthropy in those communities. The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Mich., winner of the Hartsook Institutes Growing Philanthropy Award in January for expanding their gifts to include community colleges and planning grants, has been aggressive in supporting nonprofits. The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Okla., also gives significant challenge grants for capital projects.
In the last 100 days, 26 Hartsook clients received $12,651,000 in challenge grants from these two foundations. When met, these 26 institutions will have raised over $130 million as a result of the challenges.
The National Exchange Club (Toledo, Ohio) received a recent leadership commitment of $200,000 toward its "Investing in America" Phase 1 campaign to bring campaign commitments to over $2.2 million. With a goal of $5.5 million to support the national child abuse prevention project, the campaign will sustain child abuse prevention efforts through a perpetual endowment; establish a proactive leadership role in contributing to the prevention field; impact evaluation and research programs; and restore and expand network resources. The national campaign is led by National Exchange Club Foundation Trustees and Campaign Co-Chairs J. Community Services League's (Independence, Mo.) "2010 Brighter Futures" capital campaign has raised $1,597,223, including a recent $25,000 grant from The Edwin Swinney Foundation. The $2.5 million campaign will enable the 93-year old organization, which offers emergency assistance (food, utilities, prescriptions, etc.), housing, counseling and job placement/retention services to individuals and families in need, to renovate and move into an expanded community resource center next to the local bus hub. Leading the campaign is Campaign Chair and Board President Katherine Barton, along with Trudy Beard, Randy Castle, Fred Hahn, Martin Kuny, Barbara Potts, Betty Snapp and Norman Swails. - Matt Beem, President and Chief Operating Officer (Kansas City)
Western Iowa Tech Community College (Sioux City, Iowa) received acceptance of a "Pathways Out of Poverty" grant proposal for nearly $4 million from the U.S. Department of Labor. The grant will support programs to assist disadvantaged populations (dislocated workers, low-income adults, disconnected youth, and individuals with criminal records) find ways out of poverty and into economic self-sufficiency through employment in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. Foundation Director Carolyn Ellwanger noted that WITCC was one of 38 recipients, and the only recipient in Iowa. Congratulations to Dr. Robert E. The Arkansas City Area Arts Council (Arkansas City, Kan.) received more than $750,000 in recent months. Campaign Leadership Committee members have secured a variety of gifts, including a recent $500,000 gift from the Ross Family for "The Community at the Burford" campaign. In addition, they anticipate support from the State of Kansas to renovate the historic theatre. They also secured more than the $200,000 needed by the end of December 2009 to meet their $412,000 J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant. According to ACAAC Executive Director Ellen Snell, Arkansas City understands "...the importance of art and culture to build the community." - Robert Swanson, Vice Chairman (Wichita, Kan.)
Black Hills State University Foundation (Spearfish, S.D.) received over $5.7 million in gifts and commitments, including two recent gifts: one for $25,000 from Dave Diamond and a $15,000 commitment from Ben and Carol Henry. Vice President of Institutional Advancement Steve Meeker, Director of Development Dwight Hansen, and BHSU President Dr. Kay Schallenkamp have been integral to this success. - Terry Snapp, Executive Vice President (Kansas City)
Geneva Hills (Lancaster, Ohio) hosted its first end-of-year Friends of Geneva Hills Banquet to recognize and appreciate its many friends and supporters. Over $730,000 has been raised toward the $1.25 million "Celebrating New Life and Growth" campaign to purchase land, provide operating and continued support, and help update, renovate and build facilities, including a $15,000 gift to name the Camp's dock. Leading the campaign with Kristy and Geoff Burns is Committee Chair Glenn Burns, Bruce McAtee, Patti Beam, Jim Callahan, Leonard and Brenda Gorsuch, Rosemary and Len Hajost, and Jackie Winegardner. - Karin Cox
reStart, Inc. (Kansas City) received a J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant of $620,000. The Mabee Challenge has re-energized the Campaign Steering Cabinet, infusing new life and excitement into their hard work. It has given Evie Craig, CEO, and Bob Dunn, Campaign Chair, an opportunity to successfully recruit new members to help reStart reach the campaign goal. - Jennifer Curzon, Vice President (Independence, Mo.); Staci Addison, Vice President (Wichita, Kan.)
Labette Community College (Parsons, Kan.) received the Carl D. Perkins Reserve Fund Grant for its Respiratory Care Program. The College will receive $50,000 to purchase a V200 ICU/ED ventilator and equipment for the program. LCC also received a $100,000 commitment for a scholarship endowment from the Goppert Foundation. The endowment is part of LCC's "Pathways to the Future" campaign which also includes a new Health Science Center, parking, and funding for deferred maintenance. - H. The Emporia Arts Council (EAC) (Emporia, Kan.) held the groundbreaking ceremony on their new 16,000 square foot facility. EAC is closing out its "Arts at the Council" campaign with more than $3.8 million raised in gifts and pledges. Approximately $2.8 million was raised for capital, more than $800,000 for annual fund and $200,000 for endowment. The capital portion of the campaign started with a $1.8 million goal. - Robert Swanson
North Carolina Symphony (Raleigh, N.C.) successfully generated $4 million in support from the community which places it halfway toward its matching requirement of $8 million under the terms of the State's $1.5 million challenge grant. The Adult Development Center (ADC) of Benton County, Inc. (Rogers, Ark.) received pledges totaling $21,000 over the last two weeks from various donors. ADC has raised nearly $5.4 million toward an overall campaign goal of $6.4 million to purchase land, build a new facility and grow its endowment. ADC provides services for adults with disabilities. - Matt Beem
Corner House (Emporia, Kan.), a drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization, received a $117,000 J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant. The grant is part of a capital project to help mothers who are in need of recovery. The facility will treat both veteran and civilian mothers. The MOTHER CHILD Project is only $175,000 from its $1.1 million goal. - Robert Swanson
Camp Wood YMCA (Elmdale, Kan.) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new $2.6 million Ritchie Family Lodge. The lodge is named for lead donors, Carol and Scott Ritchie (Wichita, Kan.). Festivities also included a celebration marking the conclusion of Camp Wood's "Great Kids, Great Futures" campaign. The group raised $6.7 million for capital and $1 million for annual fund. The campaign supported construction of eight new facilities and the renovation of five others. - Robert Swanson
Mid-America Arts Alliance (Kansas City) received a $250,000 challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation in support of its first large-scale public fundraising initiative. Funds raised through this capital campaign will allow M-AAA to expand and improve its Crossroads Arts District headquarters, culminating in a "Culture Lab" capstone renovation which will include a staging area for exhibition installations, performing arts events, lectures and poetry workshops. Chadron State College Foundation (Chadron, Neb.) received $200,000 in additional gifts and pledges to its "Vision 2011" campaign in the month of November and received a commitment of $750,000 as the lead gift for its Rangeland Agriculture Center & Pavilion. - Robert Swanson
Intersection Connection (Lafayette, Ind.) received a $10,000 gift from Robert and Virginia Mangus. Intersection Connection is a joint venture between Ivy Tech Community College, YMCA, Junior Achievement and other organizations in north-central Indiana. Family Life Center (Riverton, Kan.) has been awarded a $189,653 challenge grant from the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation in support of their $2 million campaign for the construction of a new Community Health Education and Wellness Center, and two years of operating support for the new facility. Hetlinger Developmental Services (Emporia, Kan.) received a $400,000 J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant. They have 12 months to reach $2 million and secure the grant. This is the first campaign in the 49-year history of Hetlinger. - Robert Swanson
Kansas Health Ethics (Wichita, Kan.) reported gifts and pledges totaling over $560,000 toward their $1.5 campaign goal. Congratulations to Executive Director Julie Russell on the progress of the organization's most significant campaign to date. - Norma Murphy
