Murray Blackwelder, former Vice Chair of Hartsook Companies, has accepted a position with The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) as Executive Director of the new UMKC Foundation. As Senior Vice President for Advancement at Purdue University (West Lafayette, Ind.), Murray led that School's recently completed $1.7 billion campaign, which surpassed its goal.
Labette Community College (Parsons, Kan.) has announced the new LCC Distinguished Alumni Award. This award will be given annually to living persons who have completed a minimum of two semesters at LCC, have distinguished themselves professionally, brought honor to Labette Community College, and/or made significant contributions of time and philanthropy to the College and/or their community. This year's recipients are: Jim Bishop, a Pittsburg real estate broker and owner of Jim Bishop and Associates, a franchise of the national Coldwell Banker real estate firm; Dr. Wanda Maxson-Ladage, long-time LCC nurse educator, former Director of Nursing for LCC and LCC Trustee; and Aaron "Skip" Smith, an artist who has exhibited his work in major cities in the United States, owned an art gallery in Atlanta, and received numerous awards for his humanitarian work.
Pamela J. Wilcox, Founder and President of SAVé - Staff and Volunteer Excellence - took over as the Interim CEO of Camp Fire USA (Kansas City, Mo.). In announcing this appointment, National Board Chair Gwen Whitson said, "Pamela is a seasoned executive who has had extensive experience in the nonprofit world, in particular as an interim executive. She specializes in tackling complex challenges, deploying her deep understanding of people and business, and an ability to pragmatically balance day-to-day issues and an organization's strategic needs."
Graceland University's (Independence, Mo.) 2006 National Champion, Second in the World Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team competed strongly in regional competition March 27. The team won their division and will move on to the USA National EXPO set for May 10-12 in Philadelphia. This is the 10th year out of 11 that Graceland has swept through regional competition and progressed to nationals. Forty five SIFE students attended the regional competition in Rogers, Arkansas. Hartsook Companies' President Matt Beem serves as a Graceland University Board member.
Dr. Gariane Gunter, Mrs. United States 2008, was honored at the Family Life Center (Riverton, Kan.) April 17. Gunter is completing her residency to become a child and adolescent psychiatrist. This reception also served as a kick off to "May is Mental Health Month".
