In this issue: More than $5 million in new or recent gifts, including five of $500,000 or greater. The National Exchange Club (Toledo, Ohio), America's oldest service club, secured a $1.25 million challenge toward a $5.5 million goal for the "Investing in America's Future" campaign to support its national project, child abuse prevention. The $1.25 million is a challenge from four members of the National Exchange Clubs Foundation Board of Directors, including: President Mike Jernigan (Charleston, S.C.); Gerald Franklin (Houston, Texas); Richard Gordon, (Ontario, Calif.); and Ken Warner (Terre Haute, Ind.). The Exchange Club's national project of child abuse prevention includes a network of approximately 100 Prevention Centers and sites nationwide. Each Center, sponsored by a local Exchange Club, provides public awareness and education, and creates momentum for making child abuse prevention a priority. Congratulations to Mike Jernigan and Interim Executive Director Karen Askew! - Bob Hartsook, JD, EdD, Chairman and CEO (Wrightsville Beach, N.C.); Karin Cox, MFA, Executive Vice President, (Wilmington, N.C.); Susan Schneweis, Executive Vice President (Kansas City); and Annette Lough, Vice President of Client Services (Wichita, Kan.) 3HC - Home Health and Hospice Care, Inc.'s (Goldsboro, N.C.) received a gift of $750,000 from State Employees Credit Union (SECU) for their "Expanding Our Compassionate Touch" campaign. The campaign, which seeks to raise a total of $4 million - has raised more than $2 million to date. The endeavor will expand Kitty Askins Hospice Center from a 12- to a 24-bed facility. Congratulations to Campaign Leadership Committee Chair Tom Bufkin, President and CEO Dean Lee, Vice President Jean Whitfield, and Director of Community Development Susan Malewich.- Karin Cox Arkansas Foodbank Network (Little Rock, Ark.), a Feeding America partner, has received recent gifts and pledges that bring its capital campaign total in excess of $13 million. A $100,000 gift in March from the Ottenhiemer Foundation pushed the campaign within $1.4 million of its $14.5 million goal. The campaign will fund the construction of a new 77,000-square foot facility which will allow the hunger relief organization to double its capacity to accept, process and distribute food to more than 450 local nonprofits located across 33 counties. Led by Campaign Chair Philip Tappan, the Campaign Leadership Committee, Executive Director Phyllis Haynes and Development Director Karen Erren have secured the largest gifts in the organization's 24-year history. - Robert G. Swanson, President (Wichita, Kan.) Claremont School of Theology (CST) (Claremont, Calif.) celebrated the support of their major donors at the 2009 Annual President's Donor Recognition Dinner at Disney Grand California Hotel. Three of these top donors have exceeded giving in the amount of $1 million and other award recipients have supported Claremont giving levels of $500,000 and above, and $100,000 and above. The evening was highlighted by a special faculty keynote address featuring faculty member Phillip Clayton's perspective on the University Project at CST. The campaign has reached the $10 million mark and the campaign staff is heading towards the end of the fiscal year with focused optimism. - Duane Dyer, ThM, Executive Vice President (San Francisco); Lisa Marcia, Fundraising Manager (Corona, Calif.); Ken Heisz, J.D., Development Director (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) Envision (Wichita, Kan.) has raised more than $1 million since October of 2008. It is poised to meet its May 1, 2009 J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant deadline. More than $600,000 in gifts and pledges has been secured in the first quarter of 2009. According to Director of Advancement Mary Shannon, the campaign has become a rallying point for supporters and area philanthropists. In addition to the worthiness of the project, new donors continue to express their appreciation and respect for the ongoing success of the campaign during the recession. The opportunity to leverage out-of-state funds and the desire to create positive news for the community are additional motivating factors for donors, says Shannon. Campaign Chair Dave Unruh, CEO Linda Merrial and Advancement Director Mary Shannon are leading Envision's "Beyond 20/20" Campaign. It is the first-ever, multi-million dollar campaign in the history of the 76-year-old organization which provides rehabilitation services to blind and low-vision individuals. - Robert Swanson The Blackhawk Area Council, Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts Rock River Valley Council (Rockford, Ill.) have pushed their campaign past the $2 million mark. A recent gift of $100,000 from Pecatonica River Popcorn Company (Livingston, Wis.) carries total campaign commitments to more than $2.3 million. A $600,000 gift of land is enabling the Councils to build a joint headquarters and volunteer service center - the first such shared facility in the country. Congratulations to BSA Blackhawk Area Council Scout Executive Don Kinney, Girl Scouts of Rock River Valley Executive Director Ruth Little, and Girl Scouts of Rock River Valley Chief Operating Officer Amanda Hamaker on the campaign's continued success. - Matthew J. Beem, President (Kansas City, Mo.) Swope Health Services (Kansas City, Mo.) recently received $600,000 in federal stimulus funding via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support an increased demand for its services. This funding will allow Swope to extend clinic hours and treat the working poor and the underinsured populations served by the organization. Congratulations to Chairman and CEO E. Frank Ellis, COO Barrett Hatches, and Swope Health Services staff and volunteers. - Bridgette O'Connor, MSW, Senior Vice President (Kansas City, Mo.) and Matt Beem Adult Development Center's (ADC) (Rogers, Ark.) "Building a Better Environment" campaign took a big step toward its goal on April 2 when Lee Scott, former CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., emceed the campaign's public launch on the site of ADC's new facility. Recent commitments to the campaign, which has secured over $4.5 million in gifts and pledges toward a $6.4 million goal, include: $50,000 from the employees of Daisy Outdoor Products (Rogers, Ark.); $500,000 from The Walton Family Foundation (Bentonville, Ark.); and a challenge grant of $640,270 from The J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation (Tulsa, Okla.). Congratulations to Honorary Campaign Chair Sharon Washburn, Campaign Co-Chairs Sarah Kendall and Rhonda Woodruff, Executive Director Brenda Neal, and Director of Development Allison McElroy. - Matt Beem University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine is raising funds for scholarships to address the national barrier to training physicians - the high cost of medical education. To support this fundraising initiative, BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas City has made a generous scholarship award commitment of $25,000 annually to support the School. Additional commitments include two recent endowed commitments - a $10,000 endowed scholarship from Dr. and Mrs. Fernando R. de Castro and a $10,000 Humanitarian Award to memorialize J. Michael DeUngria, M.D. ('95), a former medical student who tragically died in February 2009 after sustaining massive head injuries secondary to a fall. DeUngria's UMKC School of Medicine friends established this endowed award in his memory. - Shayna Simon, Senior Consultant (Kansas City); Susan Schneweis; and Bob Hartsook Harvesters - The Community Food Network, Kansas City's largest food pantry, received a $500,000 gift from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City for Crisis Food Distribution. Congratulations to Chief Resource Officer Joanna Sebelien, Director of Fund Development Angela Heer Manager of Major Gifts Jamie Roach, and President and CEO Karen Haren. - Bob Hartsook Corner House (Emporia, Kan.), a drug and alcohol rehabilitation nonprofit in rural Kansas, received a $200,000 grant from the W.S. & E.C. Jones Foundation in March as part of its efforts to build a mother-child rehabilitation center. Research indicates that mothers kept with their young child during the addiction recovery process convalesce more quickly and recovery lasts longer. More than $450,000 has been raised to date for the initiative. The organization must raise an additional $400,000 to complete the project. The 33-year-old organization completed its first-ever capital campaign in 2007 - a $1.5 million effort that funded construction of a new treatment and administration facility. - Robert Swanson Geneva Hills (Lancaster, Ohio) has received a gift of $10,000 from the Bertha Wilson Trust to provide support for camp scholarships for underprivileged and first-time campers as well as children with siblings attending. This first-phase campaign for Geneva Hills seeks an initial $1 million for the acquisition of land. The campaign is part of a larger vision that will update, renovate and build camp facilities and improve the property to open the doors to a wider audience. Congratulations to Kristy and Geoff Burns and their Board of Directors. - Karin Cox Family Guidance Center (St. Joseph, Mo.) has raised over $260,000 toward its $2.3 million "Building for Tomorrow" campaign,. The campaign aims to provide fixtures and furnishings for the organization's new facility, as well as provide critical funding for mental health programs for two vulnerable populations - children and the elderly. Congratulations to Campaign Honorary Co-chairs Martin and LaVell Rucker and Jim Graves; Campaign Co-chairs Teresa Humphreys, Bill McMurray, and Ali Wray; President and CEO Garry Hammond, and the Family Guidance Center Board of Directors, Campaign Steering Committee and staff. - Bridgette O'Connor Wilderness Retreat and Development Center (Lawson, Mo.) seeks more than $134,000 in 2009 for improvements to the camp, including an wheelchair lift in Rainbow Lodge, a new program vehicle and construction of a Tree House Village. Beyond this year's goals, Wilderness seeks an additional $2,692,500 for a new dining hall, lake improvements, a nature center, teambuilding initiatives and endowment and operating support. Phase II of "Mapping Our Future," which has secured more than $14,000 in gifts and pledges, will improve the Wilderness experience to help campers develop leadership skills and create lifelong friendships.
