Robert F. Hartsook, JD, EdD
Bob Hartsook stands as one of the most recognized and outspoken fundraisers in the country today. His unique ability to see the field of fundraising through the eyes of the development professional, a successful businessman, and a seasoned philanthropist gives him a perspective unmatched by others.
Demonstrating a constant desire to improve the overall profession, Bob was recognized with the naming of the first academic Chair in Fundraising in the world with Indiana University's Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising. "It is fitting that the first chair in fundraising acknowledges the career of Bob Hartsook who is one of America's most dedicated and recognized fundraising counsel," said Gene Tempel, Executive Director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
Since 1987, Hartsook Companies, the company he founded, has raised billions of dollars for over 2,200 clients worldwide. With over 60 professionals and 441 clients in 2010, Hartsook stands as one of the largest fundraising consulting firms in America. The firm has recently taken on a new challenge: increasing philanthropy by 25 percent over the next 20 years.
Bob has dedicated a large portion of his career to improving the fundraising profession and is on the cutting edge when it comes to studying and distilling information compiled by the Center on Philanthropy and other prominent authorities, and seeking practical applications of that knowledge to move an organization’s advancement activities forward for unprecedented results.
In 2009, he created the Hartsook Institutes for Fundraising, which calls for a multi-campus network of Institutes dedicated to a knowledge, research, and competency-based curriculum designed to improve the quality of fundraising professionals. In December 2009, Hartsook selected the initial site for the first Institute as Avila University, Kansas City, Mo., making the Hartsook Institute for Fundraising at Avila University one of only three in the world to offer an Accredited Masters Degree in Fundraising.
Bob may be unique in that he is the only fundraiser to write a book on the topic of million dollar gifts; raise virtually thousands of million and multimillion dollar gifts; and to give several million dollar gifts himself - including his December 2009 $1.2 million gift to Avila for the creation of the Institute. His six books include: Reality Fundraising: Proven, Practical Ideas for the Enlightened Fundraiser; Closing that Gift!; How to Get Million Dollar Gifts and Have Donors Thank You; Getting Your Ducks in a Row!; Nobody Wants to Give Money Away!; and On the Money!
In addition to serving as the Chairman of the Board of Hartsook Companies, Inc., Bob serves as President of the Hartsook Institutes for Fundraising. Bob's many honors have been highlighted by his selection for the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy Spirit of Philanthropy Award in 2004. In 2003 Emporia State University honored him with their Distinguished Alumni Award. Bob holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics, a master's degree in counseling, a law degree and a doctorate in education.
