School of Philanthropy at IUPUI Approved (Gary, IN) - The Indiana University Board of Trustees approved the formation of a School of Philanthropy to be located on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Earlier in the week, IU announced Gene Tempel, a longtime advocate of a School of Philanthropy, would return to the Center on Philanthropy as a senior fellow focused on establishing the new school.

Matt Beem was named AFP's Fundraiser of the Year for the Greater Kansas City Area. He was nominated by TLC Community Center, Bob Drummond. He is the 16th Hartsook consultant or client to receive such and honor.
The definitive fundraising text from Jossey-Bass, Principles and Practice of Fundraising, was recently published. It comprehensively addresses all the major forms of fundraising and critical topics such as donor behavior and fundraising planning. Many charities are succeeding in winning gifts of $1-million or more, and many more are continuing to make vigorous efforts to cultivate wealthy donors in the hopes that such efforts will eventually pay off, despite The Chronicle's recent report on America's 50 most-generous donors that even the wealthiest Americans are slowing their giving as they try to regain their footing in the bad economy. From the Chronicle: "Some experts predict that, when the next Giving USA tally of philanthropy comes out in a few weeks, the research will show another drop in giving for 2009, on top of a record decline in 2008. Not Bob Hartsook. The Kansas City, Mo., fund-raising consultant projects that giving actually increased last year by about 2 percent, because, he writes, "2009 was the year that it was embarrassing to be successful."
