A Glimpse Into the World of High Capacity Givers: Experimental Evidence from a University Capital Campaign

NBER Working Paper 22099 (2016), Levin, Tova, Steven D. Levitt and John A. List

"The wealthiest 10% of donors now give 90% of charitable dollars in the U.S., but little is known about what motivates them. Using a natural field experiment on over 5,000 high capacity donors, we find persistence in giving patterns, that signals of program quality influence giving, and that the price of giving is not unduly important. Unlike typical small donors, our givers respond only on the intensive margin, and often with a longer time lag. Our study highlights the value to practitioners of partnering with academics, as our intervention has generated $30 million in incremental donations to the University."

John A. List
is the Visiting Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. He is a world leader in experimental economics, and The Kenneth Griffin Distinguished Service Professor of Economics and Chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago. List is a pioneer in scientific methods used for testing economic theory directly in the marketplace.

Ask Hartsook!
Do you have a tough fundraising question?
Send your questions to askhartsook@hartsookcompanies.com. We will respond by email and your question may be featured in a future eHartsook on Philanthropy.

QUESTION: We have several dependable donors, but we know we need to enlage our donor and prospective donor pools. Any thought on that?

Since your board members should be individuals of affluence and influence in the community, and because they already know about the great work you do, leverage those connections to broaden your base of support. Prospective donors want their money to do more than "good things for people." They want to know how you are going to spend the money and as much as possible about the specific outcomes to come. Don't just "expand capacity," "expand capacity from serving 1,000 families this year to serving 1,500 families next year." Nonprofits that are specific about their goals and demonstrate results will attract enthusiastic donors.

Strategies for Success: Fundraising from the Heart

Valuing a nonprofit's mission is essential to connecting with donors. Donors will notice a fundraiser's lack of enthusiasm. But there are ways to recharge your drive for fundraising: Remember why you decided to get into the business in the first place. Visit the organization's frontline programs and ask staff for new success stories. Consider creative ways to get and stay inspired. Go here to read more.
