The Most Influential 'Living Person' in Philanthropy

Bob Hartsook was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration by Plymouth University in Plymouth, England. Church Initiates Campaign to Rejuvenate and Revitalize Its Century-old Building

Central Presbyterian Church (Summit, N.J.) has enlisted Hartsook to provide counsel for its capital campaign Celebrating 150 Years: In Honor of Our Past, Present and Future. The century-old church has not undertaken a comprehensive fundraising campaign in twenty-five years. This $7.5 million goal seeks to complete Central Presbyterian Church's priority capital needs; initiate rejuvenation and revitalization projects; and fund an endowment.

Wichita Swim Club Prepares to Renovate Its Natatorium

The Wichita Swim Club (Wichita, Kan.) was founded in 1954. The Club moved to its present location at the Garvey Aquatic Center in 1991. The Wichita Swim Club is one of only a few parent-owned swim clubs in the nation with its own pool and facility. The organization has contracted with Hartsook to assess its fundraising goals to renovate its natatorium.

Colorado 119-Year-Old Organization Looks to Hartsook for Counsel

Early Connections Learning Centers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has contracted with Hartsook to conduct a pre-campaign assessment for the childcare organization - the oldest in Colorado. Early Connections Learning Centers provides early childhood care and education for children of families of limited means in the Pikes Peak region. Its mission is to provide high-quality, comprehensive early care and education for all children. A management team with a combined total of over 100 years with Early Connections and a 119-year record of excellence in early care and education gives parents confidence that they can count on Early Connections Learning Centers now and in the future.

The Importance of Being Marginal: Gender Differences in Generosity

American Economic Review, DellaVigna, Stefano, John A List, Ulrike Malmendier, Gautom Rao

Do men and women have different social preferences? Previous findings are contradictory. We provide a potential explanation using evidence from a field experiment. In a door-to-door solicitation, men and women are equally generous, but women become less generous when it becomes easy to avoid the solicitor. Our structural estimates of the social preference parameters suggest an explanation: women are more likely to be on the margin of giving, partly because of a less dispersed distribution of altruism. We find similar results for the willingness to complete an unpaid survey: women are more likely to be on the margin of participation.

John A. List is the Visiting Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. He is a world leader in experimental economics, and The Kenneth Griffin Distinguished Service Professor of Economics and Chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago. List is a pioneer in scientific methods used for testing economic theory directly in the marketplace.

Kansas City Nonprofit to Launch Our Legacy... Our Future

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City (Kansas City) has served Kansas City's youth for over a century. The organization has retained Hartsook to provide counsel for its campaign: Our Legacy…Our Future. The $10.5 million campaign seeks to secure support for capital improvements; build facility, program and scholarship reserves; and support an endowment. According to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the organization is expecting future growth in unserved populations in metropolitan areas. This campaign will allow the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City to plan and prepare for increased capacity to carry out the good work they are accomplishing now, in even more communities.

QUESTION: What are some of the keys elements of a campaign that we should consider prior to getting started?

A comprehensive fundraising program must begin with a supportive board of directors, an involved development committee and development staff and a committed CEO or Executive Director who is 100% behind the development director and the development staff. Next, evaluate your current donor management system and consider whether it will be adequate for a campaign. As you turn your attention toward a campaign, don't forget about your annual fund. It needs to grow, not diminish during a campaign. Identifying and cultivating donors who can make major gifts needs to be addressed based on research. Consider retaining professional support for uncovering new donors and making data-based decisions on how much to ask for during a solicitation. Taking time to prepare for a campaign will be time well spent.

One thing nonprofits can count on is that their campaigns will not go as planned. One client, who was expecting a multi-million-dollar gift that never materialized, was a great example of why it is never good to lose heart or give up hope, even in the face of disappointment.
