Consider This...

photoThe Price of Compassion?

"Sometimes it's about nothing more than helping a person out for a week or two." It was a refreshing interview. The prospect being interviewed had his own foundation and he was lamenting the troublesome trend - as he saw it - in the nonprofit world "to solve the problem - forever."

Our topic was a capital campaign for treating those suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction in his community, but it might as well have been a campaign for a battered women's shelter, expansion of a food bank or construction of a hospice house.

"I see too many donors these days who want a 'plan' to end hunger in our city or end teenage pregnancy or stop teen drug use before making a donation. I think we get carried away these days thinking that we can solve problems that have been with us for time immemorial."

He was an older gentleman, past retirement age, and a successful businessman. "So what if the homeless shelter doesn't make money or that it has to fund raise each year to support the shelter once it's built. So what if there will be the same number of people served next year as there were this year. We are not going to stop it. What's important is that the person needs help. If a decent meal and a safe bed can be provided, that is a good deed done. So what if the homeless problem is not solved."

I am often reminded of this donor's final comment. "Robert, sometimes charity is just about compassion."

Remember, compassion has no season - seek it and share it throughout the year as you cultivate donors, solicit gifts and serve clients.

- Robert G. Swanson, President (Wichita) robert@hartsookcompanies.com

Hot Off the Press

The Wall Street Journal featured Bob Hartsook's $1.5 million gift to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University on Oct. 13 as the "Gift of the Week." The Hartsook gift will create the Robert F. Hartsook Endowed Chair in Fundraising, the first of its kind anywhere. Said Center Executive Director Gene Tempel, "It is fitting that the first chair in fundraising acknowledges the career of Bob Hartsook, one of America's most dedicated and recognized fundraising counsel."

How to Get Million Dollar Gifts and Have Donors Thank You!, Bob Hartsook's second of six books, has been selected as required text by The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University for a graduate level course in fundraising.

Issue 3, 2006 of The Giving USA Quarterly quotes Adrian Sargeant - A study by Adrian Sargeant, Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and others assesses differences between an organization's donors who have already pledged a legacy gift and donors who have not made that pledge. The report confirms that most legacy pledgers are women who do not feel a need to provide for children through their estates. Other helpful clues noted in this issue of the quarterly giving report include segmenting files into groups of donors around the age of 47 and asking them to make a will and older donors asking them to include the charity in their estate plan. Organization effectiveness and performance are key elements in getting the prospect to commit.

Fundraising Magic - 33.5 Strategies for Turning Board Members into Money Makers by Robert Swanson will be released at AFP's 44th International Conference on Fundraising.

The January/February 2007 issue of Advancing Philanthropy highlights the announcement of the first endowed chair in fundraising established through a $1.5 million gift from Bob Hartsook to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and the appointment of Adrian Sargeant, a leading international expert in fundraising research, as the chair holder.

"New Professorship Created to Bolster Fund-Raising Research," an article in the February 22 issue of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, tells of the motivation behind Bob Hartsook's $1.5 million gift to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University that established the first ever endowed chair in fundraising. The article continues with an interview of Adrian Sargeant, the first holder of the Hartsook Chair in Fundraising, where he discusses his aspirations for the position, and tells of the types of research he plans to conduct.
