A Scout is Courteous

Courteous: polite, respectful, showing consideration.

From a nonprofit's first greeting with Hartsook's Support Services to the capstone gift of an Integrated Fundraising Campaign™, showing consideration is what we do. Said Hudson Valley Council's Campaign Co-Chair, Jason Barlow. "Hartsook's long history with the Boy Scouts of America persuaded even our most cautious board members to retain the firm as professional counsel. Their onsite visits and weekly phone calls engendered confidence in our campaign committee. With Hartsook's involvement, we never lacked support."

Campaign Success Story: Westark Area Council, Boy Scouts of America

The Westark Area Council's (Fort Smith, Ark.) five-year strategic plan focused on the following initiatives: youth membership, volunteer leadership, community partnerships, Council properties, and financial stability. Now, its campaign - Leading the Way - has positioned Westark Area Council and the 17 Arkansas counties it serves to move forward with confidence. By proactively addressing its capital, operating and endowment needs, the Council will be able to extend its life-changing program to another century of Scouts.

Ask Hartsook!

Do you have a tough fundraising question?
Send your questions to [email protected] and we will respond by email. Your question may be featured in a future eHartsook on Scouting.

QUESTION: How can we set ourselves apart from so many other councils in our area?

One of the first tips that comes to mind is sending personal notes and making calls to say thank you. Email and direct mail pieces have become so prevalent that they can get lost in the crowd. For many donors, receiving a personal call or handwritten note is so unexpected that it tends to get their attention. Be sure to use the call or note to say something important. Did you recently host an event that was reported on in the local paper? Do you have a success story from a community member who has been helped by your services? Enclose pictures and newspaper clippings. If your donor wins an award, is promoted or elected to an office, make sure to send your congratulations. Use the power of personal communication to show you care about them and appreciate their support.

Get to Know the Hartsook Team

From his days as an Eagle Scout, the foundation was built for Senior Vice President Jason Wood's distinguished fundraising career. Prior to joining Hartsook, he was President and CEO of the Pikes Peak United Way (PPUW) in Colorado Springs, Co., where he was actively involved in fundraising. He personally secured $29 million in new multiyear funding in 3.5 years, including the organization's first $1 million/$10 million gifts for new initiatives and secured $5 million in federal grants from federal, corporate and individual sources to support new programs. Jason managed a 35-member team, $6.7 million annual campaign and a $5.5 million annual operating budget. He tripled donors at the $100,000 level, secured 12 planned gifts totaling $6 million and increased new donors by 10 percent per annual campaign. Jason holds a B.A. in nonprofit management from Rockhurst University, with a specialty in fundraising and community engagement.
