|
Savvy administrator and educator, seasoned fundraiser and caring mentor, Hal's quiet confidence and sophisticated manner have opened many doors throughout his diverse career, affording him unique opportunities to learn about - as well as experience - a variety of people and places. These experiences have formed him into the notable person he is today. As Executive Vice President for Hartsook Companies, Hal is based in Kansas City. He is expert in the areas of endowment development, major gift cultivation and solicitation, campaign assessments, development office audits and mentoring/executive coaching. He will share his talent in these areas with Hartsook clients across the country. Before joining Hartsook Companies, Hal was with The Moran Company, a Kansas City-based fundraising consulting firm. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as Executive Director of Saint Luke's Hospital Foundation where he directed the successful $59 million campaign for medical education and research - a campaign that exceeded its original goal by more than $9 million in just three years. During Hal's time with the Foundation he also increased their endowment three-fold, taking it from $32 million to $99 million. Hal served a 20-year term as President of Bethel College. Notable successes during his reign were: five major buildings built debt free, an endowed chairs program initiated, significant growth in endowed funds each year and 19 consecutive years with a balanced budget. A native of Canada, Hal earned his Master of Arts from the University of Michigan and his PhD from Duke University. Post-graduate studies include a five-month sabbatical seminar with Peter Drucker on Executive Management. He has taught history at Oxford University in England and was a Fulbright Scholar in Africa. Hal has written several college text books and has published numerous articles, including "How to Build and Benefit from an Endowment," "Campaign Solicitation: The Art of Asking," and a case study in Bob Hartsook's first book, "Closing that Gift." Among his many honors and awards, Hal was the recipient of the 1999 "Excellence in Fundraising Award" from the Greater Kansas City Council on Philanthropy and was recognized by the Council of Independent Colleges for outstanding entrepreneurial management of a small college for the decade (the 70's). Hal is a member of the Council on Philanthropy and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, MidAmerica Chapter. He and his wife, Carolyn, live in Kansas City and have three grown children. |
