As resident counsel for Hartsook Companies, Inc. with Wentworth Military Academy, Bud Cooper raised $20 million in two years. But why stop there? Wentworth extended its contract with the firm to raise $30 million with Bud's assistance. In addition to his work at Wentworth, Bud has provided non-resident counsel to other Hartsook clients across the country, including The Salvation Army of Kansas City and Western Missouri, where he was executive director of development prior to joining Hartsook Companies. During his tenure with The Army, he elevated the Kansas City area to the highest level of per capita giving in the country for The Salvation Army. With responsibility for planned and major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, direct mail, special events and community relations, he also led a successful $11.3 million capital campaign, the largest ever for The Army in Kansas City. Bud attributes his success to two principles: long-term commitment to the organizations he serves and genuine relationships with donors and friends. "Go gentle with people, make no judgments, and they respond in kind," says Bud, whose efforts to improve the human condition began as pastor for the Kansas East Conference of the United Methodist Church. Through the years, he has continued to address these concerns not only by helping organizations raise funds to support their missions, but by teaching, mentoring and sharing. Bud has been an adjunct instructor for the University of Missouri-Kansas City, facilitated support groups and conducted training sessions in teaching and leadership effectiveness at conferences nationwide. He understands the challenges and opportunities inherent in volunteering because he himself has volunteered so extensively, including service on more than a dozen boards of directors. Bud holds a doctorate from the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary and a master of divinity degree from Saint Paul School of Theology. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Pittsburg State University and a liberal arts degree from Labette County Community College. Bud is a member of the Council on Philanthropy and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, through which he is being honored as the 2005 Outstanding Fundraising Professional of the Year. He is accredited through CFRE. Bud lives in Shawnee, Kansas, with his wife, Judy. They have two grown children, Kurt and Heather. |
