Matthew J. Beem, MPA, CFRE

President

Leadership Cabinet

For his clients and colleagues, Matt is a compass. For Hartsook Companies, he provides leadership nationwide.

A polished fundraiser and skilled teacher, Matt gains greatest pleasure helping others make a difference in the world. His broad fundraising background provides insight and strategic direction for capital, major and planned gifts initiatives. Professional and volunteer fundraisers credit his creative counsel with moving donors toward philanthropic relationships that benefit themselves and the organizations they support.

During his 15 years as a professional fundraiser, Matt has helped nonprofits raise more than $180 million. Whether working with institutions of higher education, international religious organizations and their related affiliates, national youth service agencies or local social service organizations, Matt brings architecture and rhythm to campaigns. He helps structure teams, develop management tools and build philanthropic relationships that benefit organizations during campaigns and into the future.

Matt has spoken at conferences and classes for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG), the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. He has written for, and been featured in, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The NonProfit Times and the International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing. Matt and Eugene C. Tempel, Director of the Center on Philanthropy, co-authored a chapter in the university-level textbook "New Strategies for Educational Fundraising."

Matt is active in AFP and ARNOVA, is a senior fellow of the University of Missouri-Kansas City's (UMKC) Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership and is a past president of the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration Alumni Board. He sits on AFP's National Research Council and on the editorial board of the Center on Philanthropy's Philanthropy Matters. Matt serves his church as a class teacher and stewardship leader and volunteers for and coaches his children's Girl and Boy Scout troops and athletic teams.

A doctoral candidate in organizational behavior at UMKC, Matt's dissertation explores the relationship between performance, evaluation and compensation in professional fundraising - an area in which his expertise is often sought. Matt holds a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and a master of public administration in nonprofit management from UMKC's Bloch School.

Matt, Kate and their three children live in the National Historic Landmark District several blocks from former President Harry Truman's home and library in Independence, Mo.
